Paris-Métro-Photo – Actes Sud

The Métro is a world of infinite richness that continues to stimulate vision. From 1900 to the present day, this book offers an anthology of photographs of the Paris Métro. It sets out to reveal to the public-to Métro travelers, especially-the close ties that unite photography and the great epic of the Métropolitain. Photography is closely linked to the history of the Paris Métro: it has tirelessly documented the various stages of the Métro's construction, its major transformations, its works of art, its effect on the city's esthetic, its sociology, its dramas, its poetry... ... While photographers-many of them famous-have done much to spread the Métro's image throughout the world and establish it as a prestigious element of the City of Light's heritage, the Paris Métro and its world have in turn offered photography and its historical development the sources of an exceptional, burgeoning iconography in which a number of masterpieces were born.
